Doug Kim is the director of Advanced Technology, Southern California Edison’s technology evaluation organization. This Transmission and Distribution Business Unit group operates as part of the Engineering and Technical Services division and is responsible for SCE’s smart grid development, which includes advanced grid technologies, energy storage, electric transportation, and the integration of energy smart consumer products.
Before taking the helm at Advanced Technology, Mr. Kim led SCE’s Plug-In Electric Vehicle Readiness efforts to ensure SCE’s grid and services are prepared to support the integration of the many new electric vehicles being marketed by automobile manufacturers.
Prior to leading the PEV Readiness group’s activities, Mr. Kim served as general manager for Edison Carrier Solutions, a business unit of SCE that provides large capacity fiber optics-based broadband services to local and long distance telephone, alternative telecommunications service providers, wireless carriers, cable television, and internet access companies.
Kim began his tenure at Edison International (EIX), the parent company of SCE, in 1996 where he was engaged in the company’s strategic planning and new business development. He also served as an internal consultant for many of EIX’s operating units. Mr. Kim went on to manage a variety of SCE organizations where he led the assessment of new business opportunities, development of strategies, and detailed business plans.
Mr. Kim earned a Master of Business Administration degree from UCLA and his Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, CA.
Kevin Dasso is Senior Director of Technology and Information Strategy at Pacific Gas and Electric Company. Kevin has 30 years of experience in the gas and electric utility business including engineering, operations, construction and asset management. Kevin is currently responsible for developing and implementing strategy and policies for the utility related to the Smart Grid and transmission and distribution technology integration. He leads the company’s Smart Grid team involving the Electric Operations, Customer Care, Energy Procurement and Information Technology departments. Kevin is a member of the Board of the Gridwise Alliance and on the Advisory Board for the California Energy Commission’s Public Interest Energy Research program. He is a former member of the Western Electricity Coordinating Council’s Reliability Policy Issues Committee, and is former chair of the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC) Planning Committee Reliability Assessment Subcommittee. Kevin received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering at Iowa State University and a M.S. in Electric Engineering at Santa Clara University. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in California and is a member of the IEEE Power Engineering Society.
Tony Tewelis joined Arizona Public Service (APS) in February of 2008. He currently is the Director, Technology Innovation. He is responsible for the overall strategic development and implementation of the Company’s advanced technology based solutions, with a key focus on smart grid technologies and the integration of renewable energy. These responsibilities include the oversight and management of the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the Company’s key asset deployments and pilot projects, including all small scale (<10 MW) solar power plants, as well as the engineering research, studies, economic evaluations and technical intelligence necessary to support the commercialization and integration of renewable energy resources
Prior to his current role, Tewelis was responsible the corporation’s renewable distributed energy program (end-use applications derived from Solar, Wind, Biogas/Biomass, Geothermal, Hydro, and other renewable fuel sources). His duties included policy development, program design, stakeholder management, market intelligence, budgeting, and other program related activities that result in the overall achievement of regulatory compliance targets, customer satisfaction levels, and other sustainability related goals that were consistent with APS’s strategic and integrated resource plans.
Prior to joining APS, Tewelis worked for nearly twenty years in Wisconsin with utilities, most recently as the Director of Customer Relations and Interconnection Services for the American Transmission Company (ATC). Before ATC, he held several management positions with Alliant Energy (formerly Wisconsin Power & Light).
Jason Babik is the Head of Strategy and Corporate Development at Direct Energy Business, leading initiatives focused on innovation and growth initiatives for enterprise customers. Jason has over a decade of experience in Corporate Development in energy, telecommunications, and technology focusing on transformational objectives of multinational corporations. Prior to these roles, Jason was a technology equity analyst and finance professional in the telecommunications equipment space.
Jason holds a B.S. in Accounting and International Business from PennsylvaniaState University, an M.S. in Accounting and Finance from BabsonCollege and is a CPA in Pennsylvania.
Witold has over 20 year of experience working with the electric utility industry with focus on power grid switching and protection, distribution automation, smart grid technologies, and communications. He currently serves as Vice President of Product Innovation at S&C Electric Company, a Chicago-based global provider of equipment and services, and a recognized leader in Distribution Automation and Smart Grid solutions. In his role Witold has responsibility for R&D and new product design for world-wide markets. Before that he was in charge of S&C’s Automation Systems Division. Prior to joining S&C, he was President of EnergyLine Systems, a supplier or real-time embedded controls systems. Earlier at EnergyLine he was responsible for product development with focus on distributed intelligence and communications. Prior to EnergyLine he worked in Silicon Valley where he was involved in development of high-tech logging equipment for the oil industry. Witold has MS in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on real-time computer controls systems.
Mark Carpenter is Sr. Vice President of T&D Operations and Measurement Services at Oncor. Over Mark’s 37 year career, he has held various field management and engineering management positions in T&D. Recent assignments include Vice President and Chief Information Officer and Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. He is responsible for the development and implementation of the Advanced Metering System and its integration with the Outage Management System.
Mark earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at Texas Tech and is active in professional activities. He is a member of the IEEE Power System Relaying Committee and the Texas Society of Professional Engineers and is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas.
Andres is an award winning engineer, executive, speaker, and author. Andres is one of the early pioneers and developers of the Smart Grid concept and technology. He championed Austin Energy’s vision, program, and implementation from 2003 – 2010, as their CIO, and co-authored the book “The Advanced Smart Grid”. He is a member of the IEEE and ASME. He has over 26 years of experience in the Energy, Telecommunications, Software and Computer industries. He is currently the EVP & Chief Strategy Officer at Proximetry, offering AirSync - the first smart grid network management platform. He is a board member of the Utility Telecom Council’s Smart Networks Council, and an advisor to KU, UCLA, UT Austin, KLD Energy, Amperion, and Zpryme. He has received over 33 awards for his industry contributions. He is a well-known speaker on Energy, Telecommunications, and IT topics. He has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kansas and he has completed executive programs at Stanford University in business, at The Wharton School at The University of Pennsylvania in quality management, and at The University of Idaho in electric utility management. Andres started his career at Microsoft as a product manager for Windows in 1986.
Dean joined ENMAX in 2003 and acts as program manager and technical lead on the award-winning ENMAX Distribution Automation program. Dean has over 20 years of experience in SCADA and Controls, and prior to joining ENMAX, held engineering positions at GE Power Systems, U2 Systems, and UMA Engineering. In 2009, Dean was co-recipient of the IEEE PES Douglas M. Staszesky Distribution Automation Award. Dean holds a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Alberta and is a registered professional engineer in the province of Alberta, Canada.
John Dirkman P.E., Sr. Product Manager, Smart Grid Global for Schneider Electric, provides product and program management for advanced integrated Smart Grid systems from concept through sales, design, development, implementation, and maintenance. He is responsible for driving the technical Smart Grid vision and strategy and ensuring product success in the marketplace. Mr. Dirkman has been with Schneider Electric for more than 10 years, and has served as product and program manager for a wide variety of Smart Grid and GIS implementations.
Dr. Deepak Divan is President and CTO of Varentec, a company funded by green-tech venture capital firm Khosla Ventures, that is providing innovative solutions to achieve a smart and dynamically controllable grid. He has over 35 years of experience in industry and academia in the areas of power electronics applied to utility and industrial systems with Varentec being his third entrepreneurial venture. Deepak is a Fellow of the IEEE, recipient of the 2006 IEEE Newell Award, and is past President of the IEEE Power Electronics Society. He has been invited to speak at various of conferences and symposiums, including the 2012 ARPA-E Summit, on topics related to next generation power electronics and emerging solutions for dynamic grid control. From 2004-2011, he served as Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Founding Director of the Intelligent Power Infrastructure Consortium at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. Prior to that, Dr. Divan led Soft Switching Technologies as Founder & CEO. He has also been a professor in Electric Engineering at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He has over 250 papers and 50 issued and pending patents. Dr. Divan combines unique perspectives on the changing landscape on the Transmission & Distribution grid, and the need for a transition to dynamic grid control, including advanced power electronics solutions. His research interests are in dynamic grid control, sustainable energy and advanced power electronics.
Based at S&C Electric Company’s headquarters in Chicago IL, Michael Edmonds is the Chief Commercial Officer of the company. Responsibilities include all aspects of the business go-to-market strategy that solve customer problems - ranging from traditional switching & protection, grid reliability, consulting services, microgrids, & the management of the electrical power grid. Previous roles at S&C include President US business, VP Strategic Solutions covering strategy, product management, and marketing.
Before joining S&C Electric Company in 2010, his previous roles included VP & GM of Siemens Energy Automation and Power Technologies Inc (PTI). With these positions, he was responsible for the business of real-time energy management (EMS/DMS) and transmission network planning businesses.
Conrad Eustis has 37 years of experience in the energy industry including 5 years as an officer in nuclear submarines and 27 years at PGE. In the last nineteen years he implemented more than twenty new technology platforms designed to provide both utility and customer benefits. These are now more popularly called “smart grid” technology and include projects in metering, demand response, and integration of renewable generation. In most of these projects, Conrad’s responsibilities included interdisciplinary roles with engineering, information technology, business case development, and contracting. In 2009, ‘10 and ’11 he served as an Adjunct Professor at PSU’s course Designing Smart Grid for Sustainable Communities. In 2010 he testified to the U.S. House Subcommittee on Technology and Innovation. He has degrees from Carnegie-Mellon and Brown Universities.
Seth co-founded EnergyHub in 2007 and continues to serve as its President. Under his leadership, EnergyHub has become a leading provider of both utility-installed and Bring Your Own Thermostat® demand response services. EnergyHub offers utilities end-to-end demand response program management, including program design, installation, marketing, and customer support services, as well as EnergyHub's Mercury software platform for device control, with the goal of enabling both utilities and consumers to benefit from participation in DR programs. Seth is a frequent speaker on demand response and connected home issues and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Smart Electric Power Alliance.
Erich W. Gunther is the Chairman, Chief Technology Officer, and co-founder of EnerNex® Corporation in Knoxville, Tennessee where he helps EnerNex clients define their strategic direction in basic R&D, technology, and product development. Mr. Gunther has more than 30 years of experience in design and development of innovative solutions to a wide array of power system problems, most notably in ways to take advantage of communications networks and technology to improve the efficiency, operating practices, and security of the electric power system. Erich is a sought after speaker for his ability to explain complex concepts associated with energy systems to a wide variety of audiences in a simple, but technically correct fashion that leads to the understanding and collaboration necessary to solve real world problems.
In 2011 Erich was recognized for his career long work in the field of electric power quality by being named an IEEE Fellow - the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement. In 2014, Erich was appointed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) a “Disaster Resilience Fellow” – a program to bring in industry subject matter experts to provide review and input to their Disaster Resilience Framework.
Erich was recognized by Greentech Media in their Networked Grid 100: The Movers and Shakers of the Smart Grid in 2012. Erich is a licensed private helicopter and instrument rated fixed wing airplane pilot and aircraft owner (N1334X), and an amateur radio operator (WG3Q).
Percy Haralson, manager of the Field Technologies Group of Grid Advancement in the Advanced Technologies organization, is responsible for distribution automation, substation automation, Home Area Network (HAN) and workforce automation.
Mr. Haralson began his 30 year career in the electric utility industry at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in Computer Engineering process monitoring and controls. He later transferred to the Transmission and Distribution business unit, where he led the design team and implemented one of the nation’s largest electric distribution automation and remote control switching systems. Percy then joined the SCE Engineering organization as the Manager of Technical Innovation where he was responsible for integrating emerging technologies into the SCE system.
Percy graduated in 1983 from the University of California, Irvine School of Engineering with a Bachelor of Science Degree in mechanical engineering.
Hormoz Kazemzadeh, is the VP of Distribution and Smart Grid at OSI, Inc. where he leads development, delivery, and support of OSI’s distribution solutions including SCADA/DMS, OMS and advanced applications. In his 23 years of experience, he has held various leadership roles in the industry focused on distribution planning, analysis, and operations. He has consulted with numerous utilities and led many projects for the implementation of advanced systems and applications. The smart grid applications that he has worked with include DPF, FLISR, VVC, and CVR. Mr. Kazemzadeh holds a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from the Ohio State University.
As Director, Marketing and Communications at the Utilities Telecom Council, Paul Lekan is responsible for the association’s marketing and public relation strategy, and is the publisher of association’s the quarterly publication, the UTC Journal. Before joining UTC, Mr. Lekan led the marketing strategy for Smart Grid company Aclara Technologies LLC. Prior to Aclara, his experience includes 16 years in marketing, product management, sales and business development roles with leading automation and technology companies including Eaton Corporation and Parker Hannifin.
As Chief Technology Officer, Larsh is leading hardware and software engineering to meet the needs of Stem's C&I, utility, and energy market customers. Prior to joining Stem, Larsh was Chief Technology Officer at Siemens Digital Grid, where he led technology development teams on products spanning from consumer metering, demand response and analytics to control center software and grid automation. He joined Siemens via the acquisition of eMeter, a Bay Area software company of which he was a co-founder and responsible for innovation and development of meter data management, analytics, and advanced smart grid applications. Prior to eMeter, he co-founded CellNet Data Systems, a pioneer in wireless networks for smart metering and distribution automation and now a unit of Landis+Gyr a Toshiba company. Larsh was a founding member of the DOE’s Gridwise Architecture Council (GWAC) and remains a Member Emeritus. He earned a B.S. and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University.
Roy comes to EcoFactor after four years as CEO at Calisolar, Inc., a vertically integrated manufacturer of solar silicon, wafers and high-performance cells. Prior to his time at Calisolar, Johnson was CEO of Redline Networks, where he guided the team to an industry leadership position in the Application Front End market, from pre-revenue to a successful acquisition by Juniper Networks for $132 million in May 2005. Previously Johnson also held the post of vice president of marketing and business development at 2Wire and spent 13 years at 3Com Corporation. He holds an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business and an AB in Economics from Dartmouth College.
Salim Khan is the CEO and a Director of Stem, Inc. He is a proven executive with 25+ years of experience in technology innovations and business management. He joined Stem from Trilliant where he was President/COO. Prior to that Salim was President/General Manager at ABB’s Network Management business in the Americas where he grew ABB’s software business unit and led multiple acquisitions of smart grid software companies with over $1 billion in investments. Prior to ABB, Salim held management positions at Landis+Gyr, Siemens and BP-Systems Control, Inc. Salim earned his Electrical / Software Engineering degree, with honors, from the University of Florida.
Dr. Jayant Kumar is the Global Director of Smart Grid Programs at Alstom Grid. He leads the company growth initiative strategies across multiple business units and product lines including utility control room applications, power electronics & IEDs and substation automation systems. In his role, he also serves as the steering committee member of corporate M&A team and partnership initiatives.
Dr. Kumar has a PhD degree with major in Electrical Engineering and Minor in Economics and Computer Science from Iowa State University. He has over 20 years of experience in the utility industry and has authored several papers in the area of power system modeling and systems operation for electric industry. Dr. Kumar represents United States for IEC WG 21 for DER integration and interoperability. He has served as a member of advisory board in a number of industrial forums and has been invited panel speakers and/or chairs at industrial conferences including IEEE PES, IEEE ISGT, EUCI and Military Smart Microgrid Conference. In his various roles at Alstom, Dr. Kumar has developed new algorithms and products, and managed number of multi-million dollar projects for several large utility customers. Prior to Alstom, Dr. Kumar worked at PG&E, and ABB Systems Control, in California and Electrical Power Research Center at Ames, Iowa.
Laura is currently the Director of Corporate Strategy for SK Telecom Americas (NYSE:SKM) and heads business development for its GridMaven™ Network Manager business. She was responsible for developing and executing the company's US smart grid entry strategy, launching enterprise software solutions in network management and billing for utilities. She brings over twelve years of experience pioneering new markets cleantech markets in the US and internationally, including brokerage and structured transactions in renewable energy credits, emission reduction credit (ERC) markets, renewable power purchase agreements and water banking.
Kevin Meagher is responsible for a wide range of product direction, business development and strategic planning. As the creator of the power system analytics concept and definition, Kevin leads the Company’s technology development and strategy as well as critical strategic relationships in emerging technologies. Recently named to the “100 People You Must Know in Smart Grid” list by GreenTech Media, Kevin is recognized as an industry expert in the areas of data acquisition, data analysis, expert systems and artificial intelligence. Prior to joining Power Analytics, Kevin was president of a boutique business consulting company that worked closely in product planning, strategic planning and business valuation for public companies such as Eaton, Invensys General Electric, and Alpha Technology, as well as leading venture capital and private equity firms from Wall Street to Silicon Valley. Kevin has authored numerous technology works and has been a frequent speaker on power and energy management and related technologies. Kevin has undergraduate degrees in Biochemistry and Business, and an Executive MBA from the University of Colorado as well as doctoral work in Knowledge Management. Kevin also holds a Master Captain's License from the USCG and has a current commission in the U.S. Merchant Marine.
Michael R. Montoya is the director of Grid Advancement for Southern California Edison’s Transmission and Distribution business unit. This Advanced Technology group, previously Engineering Advancement, was created in November 2004 to evaluate, test, demonstrate, and analyze technologies for implementation on SCE’s grid. Under Montoya’s leadership, Grid Advancement teams investigate advancements in power systems modeling and analysis, transmission and distribution automation, distributed energy resources, home area networking, communications and security, infrastructure improvements, asset management, and a variety of devices and systems to make the electric grid more reliable, safe and affordable.
Mr. Montoya has made many contributions throughout his 37-year career at SCE. Prior to heading research, development and demonstration at SCE, Montoya was director of TDBU’s Project Management Organization and director of Grid Operations, Protection and Controls. During his tenure at SCE he served in both technical and managerial capacities. Montoya managed transmission substation projects, was superintendent of transmission construction and maintenance, and superintendent of substation operations and maintenance, and held supervisory and bargaining unit positions for the Transmission and Substation division.
Montoya earned his undergraduate degree in business administration from the University of La Verne and certificates in I.T. Essentials for Business Leadership from Pepperdine University and Sustaining the Innovative Organization from the Sloan School of Management at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Jeff Nichols is the Director of Information Security and Information Management for the Sempra Energy utilities. The utilities serve the energy needs of over 20 million customers in a 24,000 square mile southern California service area. Mr. Nichols’ organization provides the complete range of info security, cybersecurity, data access, analytics & data management services for the utilities’ 12,000 employees. His organization also leads numerous strategic planning, Smart Grid and “big data” initiatives.
Mr. Nichols was previously the Director of IT Infrastructure for the Sempra utilities. Before coming to Sempra, he was Executive Director of IT Infrastructure at Kaiser Permanente; a divisional VP and CTO at Science Applications International Corporation; and VP/General Manager at a private software development firm.
Mr. Nichols serves on multiple Boards, including 211 San Diego, a nonprofit community service organization; the Utility Analytics Institute; CES21 (California Energy Systems for the 21st Century); and the Utilities Telecom Council (UTC). He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Kentucky and a master’s degree in business administration from Kent State University.
Vassilis is the CEO and co-founder of Intelen Inc, a New York based software company in the domain of building energy efficiency analytics and customer engagement with the use of advanced behavioral data science. Intelen has already completed three funding rounds and is currently under high growth, expanding in USA and in many European countries. He has global recognitions with his start-up, in top innovation and entrepreneurship contests (US Red herring global, SVASE Silicon Valley Launch, Siemens global smartgrid innovation award). From 2005 to 2011, he has worked on technical trend forecasting methodologies and innovation management procedures, focusing on the Big Data problems applied to Utilities and the Energy Sector (Smart Grids).
He has also worked for over 9 years in applied energy behavioral science, data analytics, algorithms and the application of social networks to change human behaviors towards a more sustainable way of living, especially in corporate environments. He applies some innovative data-driven behavioral science and mobile learning techniques over utility and meter data to identify behavioral trends that can raise the awareness of people inside commercial and educational buildings.
Intelen, Inc is currently deploying advanced energy and engagement analytics services to big Utilities and C&I customers.
He is a valedictorian Electrical Engineer from Dundee University, Scotland with postgraduate studies at Imperial College, LSE, Cambridge, Ecole Polytechnique and a PhD from Technical University of Athens, focused on real-time big data decision making.
Naimish Patel is the Founder and CEO of Gridco Systems, a leader in agile grid infrastructure solutions, enabling utilities to more effectively integrate renewable and distributed generation, increase energy efficiency, manage peak capacity, and improve system reliability. Previously, Naimish was an EIR at General Catalyst Partners. Prior to joining General Catalyst, Naimish was one of the four founding team members of Sycamore Networks. Naimish holds B.S., M.S., and M.Eng. degrees in electrical engineering from MIT and is the holder of 18 patents. He serves on the Advanced Energy Economy Board of Directors and on the President’s Council at Olin College.
Eric is the Vice President of Engineering at Xtreme Power where he and his team are focused on developing utility scale energy storage systems and have fielded more than 75MW worth of systems. His work background includes over 10 years of experience with tenures as a SCADA Systems Engineer and Power System Design Engineer. Eric has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University and a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas and is a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas.
Joaquin Silva co-founded On-Ramp Wireless in 2008 to address the large technology gap for pervasive wide-area wireless in the Smart Grid and utility automation markets. Under his leadership, On-Ramp has become an industry pioneer in the Smart Grid space, obtaining a DOE grant for below ground monitoring of distribution grid assets. Joaquin is a frequent panelist and speaker at industry events, including Greentech Media’s Networked Grid 2011 and UTC Telecom 2011, discussing Smart Grid applications and the use of wireless technology. Based on Joaquin’s leadership and direction, On-Ramp Wireless was also selected as a World Economic Forum 2011 Technology Pioneer, and as a 2011 Bloomberg New Energy Finance Pioneer. Prior to founding On-Ramp Wireless, Joaquin was co-founder, President and COO of Ostendo Technologies Inc., where he was instrumental in developing a unique display technology and winning several new customer and government programs. Prior to Ostendo, Joaquin was a Vice President at the investment banking firm Montgomery & Co., where he led their wireless and semiconductor franchise for 6 years. Earlier in his career, Joaquin was a Captain in the United States Air Force. He has an MBA from University of California, Los Angeles and a BS in Management from the United States Air Force Academy.
Mischa is an ambitious professional with a drive for knowledge and new challenges. He is known for his high level of enthusiasm, strong work ethic with an ability to communicate clearly and concisely. He has experience in project management, customer relations, and time sensitive product development related to wireless, electronic, and electrical systems. At age 29, in 2009, Mischa founded the company Awesense, with the sole purpose of solving the global problem of energy loss in the electrical grid. Today, Awesense has nearly 20 employees, and has customers in North America, Latin America, Europe, with business partners in these regions plus Asia-Pacific, China, and Japan.
Mischa holds a Diploma of Technology in Telecommunications from BCIT, and a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from University of Victoria. Mischa also represents Awesense Wireless as a voting and participating member within the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP) led by National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Andrew brings over two decades of experience in strategic advisory, business development, corporate finance and M&A transactional experience to AutoGrid Systems. For the past five years, he has been active in the Electric Utility sector, developing and executing demand-side management strategies for both a regulated electric utility and for private sector early stage companies. During this time, he has worked with a diverse range of companies, including those focused on the delivery and provision of energy efficiency, demand response, distributed generation and the electrification of the transportation sector.Most recently, Andrew was the Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy, Development and Utilities for SCIenergy, an early stage technology company focused on delivering advanced software tools to commercial building energy efficiency. Prior to SCIenergy, Andrew was the Senior Director of the Customer Energy Products group at Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), where he was responsible for developing products, services and rates for PG&E’s 12 million customers to encourage energy efficiency, create demand response programs and accelerate the adoption of distributed generation and electric vehicles.Andrew holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and Economics from Wesleyan University, where he was awarded the White Fellowship. In addition, Andrew studied International Economics and History at the London School of Economics, United Kingdom. He is formerly NASD Series 7, 63 and 24 certified.

As Founder and President of Geli Ryan Wartena brings over 10 years of experience in computational and battery R&D and 10 years experience in energy storage business and control platform technologies. Since 2010, Ryan has served as CEO, Chief Strategy Officer, Director of Product, and President of Geli, a San Francisco & Melbourne based energy software and business solutions company. Ryan directs Geli’s collection of software products to create the Geli Internet of Energy platform to support all ecosystem partners to provide energy services from networked assets.
Prior experience includes computational software development, UL/ETL storage product validation, organizing battery pack manufacturing in US and Japan, developing solid-state Li‐ion microbatteries, and integrating energy storage systems into grid networks. He is the author of patents in energy storage and energy computing technologies. Ryan holds degrees in Chemical Engineering from UC San Diego, Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology, Post Doc research at Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC and MIT. Ryan loves long-lived energy networks and his goal in life is to see the world operate on a renewably energized Internet of Energy.
Bradley Williams is Vice president of Oracle Utilities Innovation Engineering, and is responsible drive innovation in electric, gas and water utility operational solutions including outage management, distribution management, distributed energy resource management, mobile workforce management, work and asset management, and analytics solutions as well as smart grid strategy.
Williams has more than 32 years of utility technology innovation experience. Prior to joining Oracle, he was a research director for Gartner’s Energy and Utilities Industry Advisory Services, focusing on utility applications of GIS, SCADA/EMS/DMS, outage and work management, and transmission and distribution (T&D) asset management research. Prior to that, he directed PacifiCorp’s T&D asset management and was responsible for long-term asset strategies and business technology that developed and implemented comprehensive IT investment programs. As director of T&D infrastructure planning, he was responsible for PacifiCorp’s subtransmission planning, telecommunications, and operations technology development groups. Williams also worked at Southern California Edison for 10 years, where he was involved in transmission system planning, distribution automation, and reliability programs. Brad holds 4 US patents and is a licensed professional engineer in California USA.
David Groarke is an experienced utility technology and strategy consultant. He has worked with power companies globally to define new growth opportunities, business model evolutions and strategic technology deployments. In this capacity, David has designed large capital technology and modernization programs ($1B+), led cleantech research teams and provided subject matter expertise for a range of utilities in the areas of technology strategy, strategic planning, innovation management, business model evolution, customer engagement, utility automation, distributed energy resource management and data analytics. He has published several industry leading smart grid research reports and grid modernization insight pieces. Prior to Indigo, David held executive positions at Accenture and PA Consulting Group and led innovative research at Greentech Media Research. David holds an Honors Degree in Economics from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland and has studied European programs at Roskilde University in Denmark and Lund University in Sweden.
Ben is the Director of Grid Research for Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables (Formerly GTM Research), specializing in Distribution Automation, Network Management and Renewables Integration markets. He previously worked as a research analyst for Knwldg Houston, formerly a green energy and healthcare consulting firm, where his research focused on AMI deployment and smart grid regulatory policy. Prior to Knwldg Houston, Ben was a policy intern with Wexler and Walker Public Policy Associates where he performed research for energy, transportation, and defense clients.
He has authored multiple studies on the smart grid market, concentrating on policy evolution, technology innovation, the market's competitive landscape and project economics. Ben has delivered keynote presentations for multiple industry conferences, moderated and participated in panels covering a variety of topics, and regularly hosts industry webinars with GTM Research / Greentech Media. Ben has been a smart grid contributor on CNN Money, NPR, and the Texas Tribune. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science.
Emma Ritch is an analyst at GTM Research, focused on communications and networking technologies for the smart grid. She has been quoted as an expert by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Nature scientific jounal and The Guardian. She previously worked as senior research analyst at the Cleantech Group, a research and consulting firm, where she advised clients on technologies, trends and investments in energy efficiency in the built environment. Prior to Cleantech, Emma worked as a cleantech reporter for the Silicon Valley Business Journal, where she covered topics including energy storage, biofuels, solar, smart grid and lighting. Emma graduated from the University of South Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and studied at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands before beginning her career as a business reporter at the Associated Press and The Sun News. She lives and works in San Francisco.
Rick Thompson co-founded Greentech Media in 2007, leading the company from unknown upstart to the authoritative information services provider covering the transformation of the global electricity system.
Prior to GTM, Thompson spent 15 years at leading technology startups, incumbent networking and telecommunications companies, and technology media and market research firms. Rick was senior telecom analyst at Light Reading/Heavy Reading, the dominant online media & research firm in the telecommunications market, acquired by CMP Media in 2005. Mr. Thompson previously served as the vice president of marketing at PanGo Networks, a wireless software startup, and as director of product management and marketing at Sycamore Networks Inc., where he defined the product strategy and launch of the industry’s first intelligent optical switching platform through their IPO in 1999. Under his leadership, Sycamore deployed several of the world’s largest intelligent optical network infrastructures. Prior to joining Sycamore, Rick held product management positions with Packet Engines, a pioneer of Gigabit Ethernet switching that was later acquired by Alcatel; and FORE Systems, a leader in ATM networking that was later acquired by Marconi and, subsequently, Ericsson. Mr. Thompson earned a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.
Katherine Tweed writes on smart grid, demand response, energy efficiency and home networking for Greentech Media. Her freelance work has appeared in a range of media outlets, from Scientific American and FoxNews to Audubon Magazine and Men’s Health. She has a master’s degree in Science, Health and Environmental Reporting from New York University. Katherine never leaves her electronics in stand-by mode.
Zach currently serves as an analyst on the Smart Grid team at GTM Research. Prior to GTM, Zach worked at Bloomberg, where he spent part of his tenure at New Energy Finance, contributing to the research and insight stream on the energy smart technologies team as well as consulting on a project for a leading global investment bank. Prior to Bloomberg, he served as a consultant at HydroEnviromental solutions, an environmental consulting and engineering firm. Zach graduated Cum Laude from Cornell University with a BS in Natural Resources and a minor in Nutritional Science. At Cornell, his undergraduate research focused on the policy issues surrounding the development and commercialization of alternative fuel vehicles in the United States. He is currently pursuing a Master’s of Science at Columbia University with a concentration on energy and sustainability.
